Windsor Wins Tournament Title With Big First Half

Windsor put up 51 points in the first half to take a 22 point lead then held on in the final period to hand East Catholic its first loss of the season and claim the 2019 CCC Boys Basketball championship with an 87-85 victory before a packed house at Bulkeley High School. The Warriors had lost to East Catholic in the regular season, but took command early in the championship game behind Amir Spears who hit four three poihters and had 23 points in the first half to lead WIndsor to a 51-29 halftime edge.

East Catholic came roaring back in the final period with a 30-point fourth quarter to pull to within one with just under two minutes left, but the rally fell just short as the Eagles were unable to get a last ditch shot off in the final second.

Spears finished with a game-high 41 points including two big jump shots to put the Warriors up by five after East Catholic had cut it to one. He had 12 points in the final period. Joe Reilly and Jaylin Hunter had big fourth quarters for the Eagles. Hunter had a team high 29 points including 11 in the final period while Reilly came up wih some big three-pointers and scored 13 in the final period.

Windsor won the tournament for the first time since 2013 and snapped East Catholic's string of three straight titles. It was the eighth tournament title all time for the Warriors, most for any team in the CCC. Windsor advanced to the championship with wins over Maloney and Manchester in the opening rounds and a tough victory over Glastonbury in the semi finals. East Catholic beat Platt and Berlin in the early rounds and survived a scare from Farmington in the semis to reach the championship game. The Eagles dropped to 23-1 with the loss while Windsor improved to 21-3.
