East Catholic Wins 2016 CCC Boys Basketball Tournament
East Catholic won its first ever CCC Boys Basketball Tournament Championship with a solid 54-49 win over Simsbury behind 21 points from freshman Joey Reilly. In a game that featured strong defense on both sides, the Eagles were able to outlast the Trojans with clutch play down the stretch.
East Catholic jumped out to an early lead, but Simsbury battled back with a stifling man-to-man defense that allowed them to cut the gap to one at the half. The Eagles widened the gap in the third but the Trojans again battled back and trailed by one at 45-44 after a Rayon Christie layup with three minutes left. But the Eagles came up with a couple of big stops and converted their free throws in the final minute to hang on for the win.
It was the first appearance in the tournament final for both schools. Both knocked off heavily favored higher seeds to reach the final game. The Warriors opened a 23-point lead midway through the third period of the final game. Although Maloney closed to within 12 several times down the stretch, the Warriors were able to hold off every attempt by the Spartans to get back into the game.
