EO Smith Wins 2nd Straight CCC Title
EO Smith came from the 14th seed to capture its second staright CCC Girls Basketball Tournament championship wih a 42-28 victory over East Catholic in the championship game, The Panthers built a big first half lead wih a pressure defense that stymied the East Catholic attack from the start. EO Smith led 28-14 at the half and rolled to the win. It was the seventh staright win for the Panthers following an overtime loss to East Catholic during the regular season.
Courtney Doherty led the offense for EO Smith with 18 points, but it was the stifling defense that limited the Eagles to a season low in point scoring that was the difference for the Panthers. East Catholic scored only 14 points in the first half and was limited to just three in the final poeriod after they had closed the gap with a brief third quarter spurt. Cami Pasqualoni led East Catholic with nine points.
Entering the tournament as the 14th seed after a tough three-game February losing streak, the Panthers became the highest seed ever to win the CCC tournament after knocking off third seed Northwest Caholic 59-43. in the opener. EO Smith's defense got better with each game as it advanced through the tourney with a 50-42 win over Glastonbury and a 57-28 victory over Conard. East Catholic reached its first ever CCC tournament championhsip by knocking off Manchester 61-54 in the opener and disposing of Bristol Eastern, a team they had lost to in the regular seaso, by a 67-56 score in the quarterfinals. THe Eagles reached the final by beating Bloomfield 73-57 in the semis.
