E. O. Smith Wins Tournament

E.O. Smith took a 14 point lead at halftime and appeared set to cruise to its first CCC Girls Basketball Tournament championship since 2016. But Newington made a strong run in the second half and cut the lead down to two before freshman Claire Greene hit a big three pointer and rallied the Panthers to a 53-45 victory in the title game.

The Panthers jumped out to the big halftime lead thanks to some strong three-point shooting. They hit seven of their eight threes in the first half. Senior guard Taylor Verboven led the Panthers with 21 points, junior guard Courtney Doherty had 11 and sophomore guard Taylor Golembiewski added eight.

Newington switched defenses in the second half and the move paid off as the Indians cut slowly into the lead and trailed 44-42 with just over three minutes left. But Greene's three pointer with just under two minutes remaining gave the Panthers some breathing room and the Indians were never able to get back into the game as the Panthers were perfect from the free throw line in the closing seconds.

Newington (20-4) was led by junior guard Ashanti Frazier who had 20 points. Senior forward Olivia St. Remy added 10. Newington was making its first ever appearance in the CCC title game. The third seeded Indians advanced with a big win over number two seed East Hartford in the semi finals after beating Farmington and East Catholic in the early rounds.

E.O. Smith reached its first final in four years by stunning top seed and previously unbeaten Windsor in the semi final round. The Panthers beat Bloomfield and Glastonbury to reach the semis.
